Natalie has it all: yearbook editor, scholarship to college, star athlete, reigning social queen. Then Keith enters her life. Secretive and enigmatic, he slowly lures her from her comfort zone.

The more Keith holds back, the more Natalie becomes intrigued with figuring him out. In her head, she's determined to keep him at arm's length, but in her heart she can't resist him. As Natalie's world slowly unravels, both their lives are changed forever in this powerful love story.

Love is a force you can't control. Rated PG for brief sexuality and language. KEITH often resembles an old screwball comedy in its characters and their chemistry.

There's a wise-cracking tough guy and a feisty woman paired together who hate each other at first, then slowly thaw into each other's arms over 95 minutes with increasingly erratic behavior. Only this is a movie set in high school about a kid who has terminal cancer.

But since you don't know that for the first 90 minutes of the film, the actions make more sense. Still, it's sometimes hard to see the bigger message, if there is one. Love is crazy? Dying is the best exemption to chemistry lab? Though consequences are shown for some of these choices, none of the characters seems to care too much.

For that reason, the frank discussions of sex, the mature handling of loss of virginity, and the fairly casual attitudes about partying, underage drinking, and getting away for the weekend without parents may ring a bit too mature for younger teens who aren't ready for vaguer messages about the purpose of life.

But for an older teenager, there may be some enjoyment here in a terminal-illness romance that trades the usual cliquish teen concerns for a whirlwind, offbeat pairing. Families can talk about terminal illness. Does Keith's behavior in the film seem believable? What about Natalie's?

What are other ways you've seen reactions to terminal illness depicted in films in terms of the attitude of the patient and those close to him or her? What would you do if you knew you only had so long to live? Would you be angry? Would you try to accomplish something big? How did the filmmakers' use of suspense regarding Keith's condition work in the film? Is it likely someone could keep an illness a secret at school? How does it add to or detract from the experience for the viewer?

But finally I ended up at Miramax where I pitched it and Harvey Weinstein heard about it and a couple hours later we had a contract. So the first step was to find a writer. They wanted somebody with some credits and they gave me their list of people. They tried to do a co-production with MTV Films, but nothing really quite worked.

At that point I sat down and completely rewrote the script the way I had originally envisioned it. Then I looked around at teenage actors and I attached two actors who I thought were really promising.

You obviously have a directorial vision for this. You can be attached as director. Then they promised again to make the film, but it never happened and the Weinsteins got into their problems with Disney and all that eventually after stopping and starting and starting to cast it. I did some more rewrites for them and then eventually I got it back a second time. All this took two years or so of just back-and-forth and waiting and meetings and having one executive in charge and then another and then another and meetings with outside production companies.

It was an endless process, but then I finally got it back and raised private money to get it done. Of course, Kessler had to cast the film all over again. Jesse McCartney, who was on tour at the time, called up to audition. Every teen script was exactly what they had seen before.
