Air-water collision is why the foam forms, particularly the base of your waterfall. What's the solution? Short-term, you can change out part of the pond's water to remove the foam. When you do, be sure to add some Stress Reducer Plus to the fresh water, which will form a beneficial slime coat on your fish and make tap water safe for them. In addition, add Defoam to your water. Safe for fish, plants and wildlife, you simply shake the bottle and pour the recommended dosage into the pond. The foam will disappear in no time.
Long-term, you have several options: Increase Filtration: Boost your filtration by adding plants to your pond or increasing the capacity of your existing filtration system. Some DOC molecules have a recognisable chemical structure that can easily be defined such as fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Another common cause is using water treatments. Green water and blanket weed treatments will break down plant matter, so always use a sludge buster afterwards! The best way to reduce green water and blanketweed, is more plants and a UVC filter, so make sure your UV bulb is working before putting treatments into your pond!
Male koi are aggressive during spawning season as they chase the females, knocking into them and shoving the female into a side wall, all in an effort to force the female to release her eggs for the male to inseminate. This thrashing, which occurs in the morning before the sun heats the pond to a higher temperature, churns up the water, and foam appears. A distinct odor accompanies the foam, an additional indication of its cause. Once spawning season is over, the foam disappears.
When water features are turned off and pond foam continues to accumulate, several causes must be considered. An overstocking of fish results in an overabundance of fish waste, classified as DOCs. The balance of beneficial bacteria used to break down the DOCs is upset by the heavy concentration of waste. The lives of your fish are in danger as the ecosystem of the pond becomes unbalanced and ammonia and nitrates are released from the decomposing matter.
Make sure a dechlorinator is used if on municipal water. There is also another notable exception to causes of foam. The previous points assume that this is an issue that continues on a daily basis or is gradually increasing.
A sudden or overnight appearance of heavy foam is frequently caused by fish spawning. This usually corrects itself in a day or two. Taking the above steps will still help ensure that all the extra proteins from this event are properly removed.
