Wells-next-the-Sea Town Between the epic expanse of sand of the world-renowned Holkham Beach and the precious bird sanctuary of Blakeney Point, lies the harbour town of Wells-next-the-Sea. The Granary was built around and used to store grain and other cereals, from ships from all over the world.

The granary was then converted into luxury apartments. The harbour is still used by fishing boats that unload their catch into the Fishing Shed , situated on the east quay.

Most of the shops along the quay are traditional seaside fare, such as amusement arcades and chip shops, however there are exceptions, such as the People Tree , selling musical instruments, soft furnishings, furniture and other items from around the world.

Most of the shops in Wells are located in Staithe Street , which runs up from the quay towards the centre of the town. This street has shops , selling all kinds of goods, its a great place to just wander and browse, but it does get busy during peak season. A busy Staithe Street in Wells next the sea. At the top of Staithe Street is the grassy rectangle known as Buttlands.

The name comes from a time when the locals used the green to practice their archery! Around the edge of the square you will find some lovely Victorian and Georgian property. In two corners of the green you will find two classy inns, offering drinks, bar food and a room for the night - The Globe - and The Crown a former coaching inn. Staithe Street is another one of those old fashioned streets which is tiny and narrow but full of interesting independent shops and tea rooms. This is now the main area for shops to be found. But just up from Staithe Street is the Buttlands, and lovely village green lined with trees and surrounded by Georgian houses. This is just a short walk away from the main streets of Wells and feels like a completely different town.

Here though can be found two very good gastro pubs, The Crown and The Globe. Both are very dog friendly and have very relaxed atmospheres. The Buttlands is where you can begin to imagine what Wells must have been like in the days of horse and carriage. Wells and the surrounding areas are fantastic for both walking, birdwatching and exploring nature.

If you walk west, you can walk for miles along the beautiful sandy beaches of Wells, Holkham and Burnham Overy Staithe , and if you walk east, starting from East Quay, you can walk along the very pretty salt marshes towards Stiffkey , Morston and Blakeney. This splendid palladian mansion is about 5 minutes away in the car and is a must see. You can spend the whole day just walking and wandering around the grounds without even going into the house. Both of these sites are two of the best bird watching sites in the UK.

And don't forget that any place that you wish to visit along the North Norfolk coast can always be got to by taking the Coasthopper bus which runs along the Norfolk Coast road.

Take a walk through shady pinewoods to the sandy beach , and you'll be greeted with a row of colourful beach stilted huts and seals basking on the sand banks. Its marshes provide the perfect habitat for wading birds, bitterns, avocets, marsh harriers and winter geese.
